Allo stesso modo la regia di Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck si limita ad essere piatta senza proporre assolutamente nulla di visivamente originale. Ambientato quasi interamente a Venezia, il film la ripropone in maniera fastidiosamente leccata, senza che il montaggio o altri elementi intervengano a rendere il tutto interessante. E perfino le musiche del grande James Netwon Howard risultano pesanti e totalmente invasive mentre provano a risuonare falsamente classicheggianti. Tentativo disastroso di rifare un film old style, alla maniera di un grande autore come Alfred Hitchcock, " The Tourist " si rivela un prodotto decisamente inerme, confezionato senza la minima lucidità: non basta inserire star hollywoodiane di prima grandezza, un regista dal gusto europeo – che però visto lo stile e la stilizzazione de " Le vite degli altri " probabilmente non c'entrava nulla – ed un'ambientazione fascinosa per realizzare un film decente. Un'ultima annotazione: dopo " Mangia prega ama ", "The Tourist" è il secondo film consecutivo ambientato in Italia che sfrutta in maniera esplicita e ridondante i più usati luoghi comuni sugli italiani, i loro usi e costumi.
